From street dog to agility dog

Boone truly had a sense of humor when he chose Tornado Tuck for us. I guess he thought I wasn’t getting nearly enough exercise so he sent us a dog that LOVES agility.

I’ve been in dog sports my whole life but never gave agility a try. ‘Til now.

Tuck is truly in his happy place every week at class. We’re bonding even more and he keeps me humble when he suddenly decides sniffing and zoomies are much more entertaining than obstacles.

This past weekend we participated in an Agility Course Test. For those in the dog sports world, it’s kind of like the CGC for agility. We had to have two qualifying runs in each level (ACT 1 and ACT 2) to earn the titles, and I’m thrilled (and actually a little surprised) that we managed to get both on Saturday.

Here’s a shot of him at an agility run through last month (look at that smile). My instructor is using this image on her current Facebook promotion.

And here is a video from one of our ACT 2 runs. Thankfully we didn’t film the second run, as crazy Tuck wiped out on the pause table. But he bounced back – uninjured – and we finished strong.

It’s hard to imagine our lives without this little ball of energy.

Our sweet & crazy Boone was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in December 2016, and amputation was performed January 24, 2017. Five weeks post-amp a mass in his chest and lung mets were discovered. He left us way too soon on March 14, 2017...tail wagging in the peaceful sunshine of our living room. His big heart and personality is missed.

  1. WOW! Now THAT is a dog who is loving what he does for fun and exercise. I’m so happy to see you and Tuck have become quite a team. It really does create such a strong bond in life. He’s one very lucky, agile and fit doggie!

Mr. Tornado Tuck, you are a whirlwind of fun!

    1. He really is a whirlwind of fun πŸ™‚ And he literally keeps me on my toes.

Boone is smiling down on us, no doubt.

  2. Tuckaroo is heaven sent! Boone is loving every minute Tuck makes you smile. It goes both ways-Tuck is a very lucky boy to have landed with you. πŸΆπŸ’•

  3. How fun! I like the nickname Tornado Tuck….we just adopted a Tucker too. A 5 month old Cairn Terrier. He is a whirlwind also, but a much loved addition to the family. We are a long way from Nitro, being a family of terriers, but I like to think he is smiling down from heaven as well. You both look like you’re having a blast!

    1. I’m sure Nitro is smiling down on all of you πŸ™‚ I have friends that run their Cairns in agility, I bet Tucker could whirl his way around a course.

  4. This just lights up my world😁😁 This match was meant to be and Boone had his paws all over this!!

Tuck really is thoroughly enjoying himself! He DEFINITELY has a huge grin on his face in that first photo! Pure bliss!! Pure joy!! I love watching you two j teract in the video and how you seemed to be having almost as much fun as Tuck!!😁 You really were allowing Tuck to be Tuck and just letting him have fun while “performing “.

I’m so happy to see this delightful update. And it’s always wonderful to reconnect with Boone too❀❀

Looking forward to so many more updates on this handsome wild boy, and always with pictures!

    Lots of love
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

    1. I’m glad this lit up your world, Sally. This crazy boy lights up our world every day, too :-).

He just relishes our weekly classes. He’s even won over our agility instructor who is a saint of patience with us. If I had a video of the first 6 weeks of classes to compare to today, I’m sure I’d be amazed at how far he’s come.

I’ll make a point to post more frequent updates (with pics, of course).

  5. Oh Tornado Tuck! you are quite the whirlwind! I love the conversation between Boone and Tuck “hold my beer” – perfect. Makes me want to give agility a try with Roxy – hard to say how that would go. I can see a number of possibilities and not all of them good. But I suspect she would like it as much as Tuck clearly does.
so good to “hear” from you!
    hugs
Teri, the Roxinator and Angel Isa

    1. Oh, Teri, I bet Roxy would LOVE agility. It’s great for dogs that need a confidence boost and it’s such a fun way to bond with your dog. And I love that you call her the Roxinator – we used to call my Lexi the Lexinator :-). If you’d like to give it a try, let me know what area you live in and I’ll ask my agility instructor if she knows of a good trainer/training facility near you.

Tuck is quite the ball of energy so agility is the perfect outlet for him. We may be entering our first official agility trial in November. I’ve learned that trials are aptly named as every dog that’s blessed my life has taught me a lesson or two in humility when we compete πŸ˜‰

      Thanks for stopping by!
