A TriPawd Memory from 1992

Today I decided to work my way through my “book closet” and found these pics of our first official foster, way back in the early 90s when we were stationed in Virginia.

At the time I worked at a boarding kennel attached to a veterinary clinic, and “Cricket” was brought in as a days old baby. She was to be euthanized because she was born without a paw and part of her foreleg. One of the vets brought her over to the kennel side of the business asking if someone would bottle feed and raise her til she was old enough to be adopted to the right family.

So my hubby and I became her caretakers for the first 8 weeks of her life. That missing paw and foreleg didn’t stop her at all. She mastered the hop at an early age and terrorized our big dogs. She made us laugh when she’d get a case of puppy zoomies, and while Cassi and ChrissyΒ were in pursuit, Cricket would slide her tiny body under a chair or the couch and just grin at them.

The family that adopted her sent us these pics of her taken with her big brother in 1993. If you look closely you can see the stub of her right leg that was missing the paw.

And it dawned on me that we had a Tripawds in our life 25 years ago. πŸ’•πŸΎ

Our sweet & crazy Boone was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in December 2016, and amputation was performed January 24, 2017. Five weeks post-amp a mass in his chest and lung mets were discovered. He left us way too soon on March 14, 2017...tail wagging in the peaceful sunshine of our living room. His big heart and personality is missed.

  1. That’s really interesting…….and such a kind thing you did for sweet Cricket.

Very sweet pictures her furever home sent you. So glad she had a chance at love and happiness…..and you gave her that chance.

Interesting that years later you were giving Boone a chance for more loving and spoiling too!

And now you have Boone AND Cricket hanging out at the Bridge rogether watching over you.

Thanks for sharing this special time with Cricket. Guess she was teaching you how to deal with tripawds way back then!

Lots of love to you and to Boone’s Earthly Sidekick Tuck πŸ™‚

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

    1. Thank you Sally 😊 Cricket was a special girl. I’m so thankful that we had the chance to help her and that she was adopted by a loving family.

I’m sure she and Boone are romping at the Bridge 🌈🐾

Hugs to you & your furkids.

  2. Woooaaaaah! That is a GREAT story! Clearly the universe knew that you are the right family for Tripawd doggies. Back then, a three-legged pet had little chance of making it out of a shelter. Bless you for being there for this sweetheart so she could live out her life, loved and cherished.

Cheers to Cricket! Without you, it’s possible Boone may have never made his way to his wonderful family.

    1. i think God was watching over Cricket the day she was brought in to be euthanized as a baby. The vet that took her in could see there was no reason to end her life. I’m sure if we hadn’t taken her under our care on one my coworkers would have.

And the family that adopted her was one of our regular daycare clients so they got to know Cricket well since she went to work with me every day.

She and Boone are surely swapping stories at the Bridge πŸΎπŸ’•πŸ˜Š
